It's too hot now
This pregnancy has been odd for me because for the most part I've been chilly. The last three pregnancies I was overheated and radiating heat, and this time I've been a walking icepop. Anyway, the night before last the air conditioning gave out. Just like last year around fourth of July, it has stopped blowing air through the vents. Just like last year, it's a heat wave. Thankfully this is one thing that the landlord acts quickly on to fix, and we should have someone out here on Monday.

We've moved mattresses downstairs and have fans blowing, but those few evening hours of waiting for the house to cool from the 90s to something cooler sucks. The girls are miserable during that part. It also doesn't help that we are all battling a cold too.

A week in books
I'm reading a very enjoyable historical crime novel at the moment, The Death Maze by Ariana Franklin. It's the second in a series featuring Adelia Aguilar, a graduate of the School of Medicine in Salerno, set in 12th century England. I haven't read the first one but it doesn't make any difference, it's easy to get the background. Interestingly, I've just discovered that Ariana Franklin is a pseudonym for Diana Norman. Recently I went looking because I thought it had been a while since I'd seen any new books by Norman. I only checked one of the British books in print databases, though, so never came across a reference to her new publications under the Franklin name.

I've got a week off work coming up so I'm looking forward to catching up on some of the pile of books beside the bed. And the pile on the living room shelves. And the landing shelf. And there's a few in the car too, I seem to remember...ah, bliss.

Last night I finished P.D. Martin's first novel, Body Count. A bit gruesome in places, and I'm not very good at doing gory at the moment, but fast paced and an easy read. It wasn't as predictable as I feared, either. I was convinced that I'd spotted who the killer was very early on, but I was proved wrong at the end.

Recently I've had a pleasant re-read of Maeve Binchy's The Glass Lake and that was just what I was in the mood for at the time, familiar comfort reading.

I finally read The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I remember borrowing it when we first bought it for the library back in 2002 but I never got into it. On the recommendation of B at wotrk I took it out again recently, and this time I flew through it. It was fascinating, and so beautifully written. It reminded me quite a bit of To Kill A Mockingbird. It didn't have quite the same feeling of innocence, but there were large similarities between the characters of Atticus and August. A sense of widsom, and calmness and tolerance, and the ability to teach without preaching.

70's memories
Copied and added to from a comment I made to [info]silent_ic_river

I remember getting a color TV (in 1976). My mom would occasionally comment watching her Mission Impossible reruns on Saturdays on Channel 5 (WNEW) she's never seen this one in color. I also remember watching Star Trek reruns on Saturdays on Channel 11 (WPIX). (I think my mom had a crush on William Shatner)

I remember going to see the tall ships during the bicentenial and looking at them from my dad's company's HQ in Liberty Plaza in NYC.

I remember getting cable TV with a pushbutton control in 1979.

I remember my parents got the 3 bedroom condo/townhouse I grew up in for 29,000 in 1969.

I remeber paying 25 cents for chocolate milk and corn chips at lunch in jr. high.

I remember being able to go home for lunch in elementary school. I think I watched one of the CBS soaps with my mom. I also remember watching Match Game when I got home from school - I think all of the risqueness/double entendress went over my head.

I remember a fuss about pants at school (vaguely) - I do remember wearing a terry tank top/shorts to the last day of school my jr year (it was a 1 hour pick up report cards day) - now kids wear shorts to school with no big deal.

I remeber thinking it was cool in 1978 to have my own (not the phone companies) plug in phone. I did a mock tv commercial for a school project on it.

I remember blue laws (retail on Sundays) - and stores getting trouble for violating them. We still have a blue law here in Bergen County NJ amazingly enough.

I remember the 10 (or was it 25) cent toll on the southern state parkway. I remember when they stopped it - not only did they remove the toll booths but filled in the tunnel under the road so to prevent it coming back.

I remember my parents 71 Maverick with the black vinyl (HOT) seats. I also remember their Ford Cortina (tiny car) and my dad's 79 Plymouth Horizon with his custom DOW-1500 plate (he was a stock broker, 1500 was a big # back then)

I remember when NY had paper licenses. People my age would fake being legal (18 back then) by changing the 2 on our birthyear (1962) to 1960. I remember realizing I could have used my mom's license - but I wasn't born in 1930!

I remember when yogurt was exotic!

I remember bringing iced tea from a powdered mix and Sunkist Lemon cooler cookies to the beach in the summer.

I remember when sunscreen was called suntan lotion!

I remember going to the gas station for my mom and bringing back a carton of cigarettes (which was $10.00) for her. I remember being embarassed about it - and worse she smoked Benson and Hedges which meant I had to ask for help as I couldn't reach the B shelf of the alphabetically organized cigarettes!

Garden 2008
Did my garden today. In the backyard garden we planted 6 varieties of tomato (I had only intended on buying 2 varieties, 2 of each, but I bought the wrong thing, we'll see what happens, I hope I get enough of any to really use them in cooking.), green bell peppers and cucumbers (3 plants of each). On the deck in deck rail boxes I did 4 boxes, one with Italian Parsley, Oregano and Basil; one with lavander, Thyme and Rosemary; and the other two with some pretty flowers. I could do without gardening flowers but Sophia and Paul wanted to do some.

Photo post
Juliet loves to make LoveNotes. They come in many different varieties, such as the envelope LoveNote that comes each day from kindergarten choice time. It usually consists of a heart and all of our names listed plus the declaration of love. Stamps and stickers adorn the envelopes. A couple weeks ago, Serafina and Juliet discovered a stash of post-it notes, and thus LoveNotes transformed into post-it variations. Also, not shown in the pictures is where Juliet labeled various objects in the house with who uses them. There was a post-it on the bathtub with all but Daddy's name on it, but the shower had a post-it with no little girls' names on it. Our door to the garage had everyone's name listed. Highly amusing. Anyway, the pictures of the fridge have a good portion of post-it notes written to me in a matter of an afternoon a few weeks ago. Some of the names you probably won't recognize are BeanBaby's name, Serafina's church friend's name, and Juliet's carpool friend's name (oh and our kitten got a mention on one note too.) If the LoveNote has handwriting, it was written by Juliet. If it is a scribble scrabble drawing, then it was written by Serafina.

Also in the pictures are a couple of Serafina I took a few minutes ago. Please ignore the messy face portion of my 2 1/2 year old and take a look at Serafina's new teeth. The front top four are the pedo-partial. She also is quite pleased with these pictures and doesn't care if you think her face is messy.

Me and my friend Fran at her daughter's birthday party:

Here's me and my friend Ali, the one I've known for 8 years but only met 2 weeks ago! This was right after I picked her up at her hotel near the Statue of Liberty.

Lily had a playdate at her friend Lexi's house yesterday. It was too quiet, so I went to check on them. Lexi is only 2 months older than Lily, but she is like her second mother. It's quite remarkable really. Lexi has a vanity table in her room, so she had Lily sitting there and she was doing her hair. This consisted of putting Eucerin lotion, Cetaphil cream, princess detangler and some Hannah Montana sparkle gel all over Lily's head. She smelled like a cheap whore.

Ella has the most amazing hair. I don't know where it came from. (shut up Susan, I know it's her follicles) Today was rainy and super humid, so her hair is super adorable.

I am such a bad LJer. I am overwhelmed with life and suspect it will last until at the very least, the end of August.

Bullets then:

- Home from Minnesota. Had a lovely time. Spent $400 at the Mall of America as pay back for Paul fogetting to do a damn thing for Mother's Day. Next year I will give very specific instructions. Something like, "Buy me a card and write in it. Have the kids make something. The end."

- Getting set for work. Very exciting. Though I had to sign a contract that I wouldn't mention Ivy League Camp on any blog, web page or social networking site. Whoops. ;)

- House is full over capacity with crap, in spite of what feels like non stop decluttering.

- Home expansion project is getting underway and I expect to start construction within the next two months. Ah, master suite, walk in closet, a desk of my own, big shower... heaven.

- The only hold up is the gynormous cess pool problems we have and the fact that we need an entire new system which will probably include tearing out our new landscaping and rebuilding it all, will certainly include a big hole in my front yard, and will smell like shit. Literally.

- My book club meeting is tonight. I didnt read the book and I really dont feel like going. I think I am going to skip it. The book was Water for Elephants, which I would like to read someday, when I have time to breath. I made caramel popcorn to bring, but I can send it with my friend.

- We moved Nathan to a big boy bed and now he hates it and wakes up a few times a night begging to come in my bed. Of course, the bed and crib wouldnt fit in his room so we chopped it up and threw it out. I hope he just gets used to it, and soon.
